Individual therapy

Individual Psychotherapy provides individuals with the opportunity to voice their feelings in a safe, comfortable environment free of judgment. It is a tool that can assist you in confronting the discomfort and can open the door to a lifetime of healing and recovery. When working with individuals, I utilize a strength-based, collaborative approach, while incorporating elements from psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based therapy. I have worked with many individuals who have experienced grief as well as complicated grief. Together we will process feelings related to grief as well as working through complex feelings, and gaining insights on how to adapt and eventually move forward in life.

Couples therapy

Perhaps you and your partner are arguing about a reoccurring pattern in your relationship and you’re ready to explore this issue further. Or maybe you are struggling with deciding if marriage and/or kids are right for you and your relationship at this time. Whatever your struggle is in your current relationship, I can help. Together we can uncover the underlying triggers that may be impacting your relationship and communication. I provide couples with therapeutic exercises that can help them uncover patterns and reasons for their discord as well as improve communication and strengthen their connection.

Parenting

Parenting can be a very fulfilling yet frustrating experience. It is my belief that finding and creating balance in your life can help ease the frustrations and highlight the joys of parenting.  Together we can explore your parenting style, challenges that you may be facing on a day to day basis, and how your parenting is impacting your other relationships.  My background in facilitating parenting groups has provided me with the skills to assist you in exploring how your past experience with your own parents has also been impacting your parenting.

EMDR

I am trained in EMDR Therapy, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an entire therapy model that has been proven to be highly effective for those who have experienced trauma.  EMDR therapy has also been very successful in helping alleviate distress in people suffering from anxiety, panic, post traumatic stress, or other painful emotions. EMDR therapy is founded on the basis that our emotional well-being is interwoven with our physical (somatic) state. Therefore, EMDR employs a body-based technique called bilateral simulation during which a therapist will guide a client through eye movements, tones, or taps in order to move a memory that has been incorrectly stored to a more functional part of the brain.

During trauma our brain processes and stores memories incorrectly.  This incorrect storage can lead to past memories feeling very present. Related or unrelated stimuli in the present can lead to people reacting as they did at the time of trauma. The brain feels as if the past disturbing event is happening currently. EMDR therapy corrects this so that the painful memories associated with the trauma lose their charge. The client can react to stimuli in the present without the past interfering.
